Mr. Yusnier Viera
President and Founder of Spicy Math. Guinness World Record in calendar calculations.
Yusnier Viera said that he knew 4 digit numbers since he could remember. His curiosity about numbers was notable before he started in his first school at age of 4. At that time he thought he could know all the numbers without knowing what infinity means.
Born in Bejucal, Havana, Cuba, April 26, 1982. His passion for mathematics was noted since he reached to win many competitions. In high school he achieved to accumulate 3 medals in the Mathematics National competitions. At the same time he won every mental arithmetic contest he was involved.
At the 2000 year, Our Champion began to study Computer Science at the University of Havana where he graduated after 5 years with an excellent average of 5.15 on a total of 5.00 thanks to its many extra points made in some of the classes of the career like: Numerical Analysis, Mathematical Analysis, Probability, Continuous and Discrete Models of Optimization as well as extraordinary participations in National Competitions of Mathematics and Programming.
Yusnier Viera was more than invincible when numbers were involved, as demonstrated by breaking two world records of Calendar Dates on Monday October 31st, 2005. The record is defined as: given a date the competitor needs to respond correctly the corresponding day of the week, for example if you ask to Yusnier Viera what day of the week was May 19, 1974 Viera will response correctly, faster than any other human of this world, that it was a SUNDAY. The first record consisted in calculate correctly 20 dates of the century in the shortest time achieving a time of 19.8 seconds (breaking the barrier of 20 seconds by calculating a date with an average of 0.99 seconds). The previous world record was 24.94 seconds. For the second world record, it was implanted the same day, he achieves to calculate 42 dates in the range that covered the years 1600-2100 in just 1 minute, smashing the previous mark of 33.
He was invited to participate to the 2nd Mental Calculation World Cup held in Giessen, Germany in 2006, reaching the runner-up in the Calendar Dates and 3rd place in a surprise competition, that consisted of adding and subtracting fractions of large numbers where you could only give the answer in simplified format (the result fraction should be irreducible), besides excellent results in other tests of addition, multiplication and square roots that catapulted him to the 4th position in the overall ranking within the top 30 human calculators in the world who had also been invited.
On Monday, December 18th, 2006, Yusnier Viera achieved to calculate 56 dates in the range that covered the years 1600-2100 in 1 minute, exceeding a previous record of 45.
In 2007 he participated in the 1st World Championship of Memorization, held in Murcia, Spain, winning the 3rd place in the contest about memorizing decimals in 1 second (he could recall correctly a 16 digit number that he saw for just 1 second) and the 9th position in the overall ranking, becoming the only human who has the privileged position of be placed in the top 10 world ranking in the competitions of Mental Calculation and Memorization at the same time.
After more than two years out of competition, Yusnier Viera broke his world record achieved on December 5th, 2009 calculating correctly in 1 minute 59 dates within the range of the years 1600 to 2100.
In June, 2010 he participated in the IV Mental Calculation World Cup, held in Magdeburg, Germany. With an extraordinary result, Yusnier Viera answered correctly 48 dates in 1 minute by writing. This performance gave him the title of "World Champion on Calendar Dates" and an Absolute World Record for these events. He also obtained the second place in one of the surprise tasks ending in sixth place in the overall ranking, once again being the best Latin American in the tournament.
In one of the most spectacular performances, on December 4th 2010, Yusnier Viera broke for first time three world records in the same day. He managed to calculate 20 dates of the century in 8.05 seconds, 93 dates in 1 minute and 365 dates in 191.44 seconds. Currently in 2012 these results remains as Absolute World Records.
In 2011 Our Champion was nominated International Ambassador for "World Math Day" due to his important contributions to mental calculation.
Methodology, Courses taught and Conferences.
Many people think that for to have skills in memorization and mental calculation you must be born with that talent. Yusnier Viera has a somewhat different view of the matter: "For develop skills in mental calculation the most important factors are the technique we use, besides the practice that we develop to improve this technique".
In the case of Our Champion is no less true that these factors are valid and also he adds his innate ability in memorization and mental calculation, able to visualize in his mind the more complex arithmetic operations, in addition to his high capacity for logical reasoning that allows him to create the most ingenious calculation algorithms. "For other part, if we can not change these innate abilities, because we are born with them as a gift from God, then why to worry about it, why not better to focus on the elements that we can change, such as the use of proper technique and the endless effort. Honestly, there is no doubt about the benefit of learning the best techniques through the Courses taught by Yusnier Viera.
Yusnier Viera was a notable Professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Havana, so he has a whole arsenal of methodology to teach his techniques of Mental Calculation and Memorization. He has given numerous lectures at universities, among which are: University of Havana, Cuba (UH); University of Informatics Science, Cuba (UCI); University of Oriente, Cuba (UO); University Autonomous of Puebla, Mexico (BUAP); Miami Dade College InterAmerican Campus, Miami, Florida, USA (MDC InterAmerican); Miami Dade College Kendall Campus, Miami, Florida, USA (MDC Kendall).
